It's basically a programme that shows how animals are prepared for the plate. People watched the slaughter process right down to eating the freshly killed animal. That may repulse some people, but here is what i was doing while watching it:
While the pigs were being slaughtered i was eating a ham sandwich. I did not feel remotely sick, just more hungry.
I guess I'm not squeamish and accept that to eat meat, animals have to be killed. Animals are cute and cuddly, but at the end of the day, you can't have it both ways i.e. humanising animals and then eating them, though not wanting to know where the meat you eat comes from.
Though I do not like intensive farming methods in animals. As it generally leads to poorer quality meat and less humane treatment of the animals in question. As Supermarkets don't really care about the animal, only about the time it takes to get it from the farm, slaughter house, processing plant to the fridges in the supermarkets.

The UK has very high standards in regards to meat production, though Europe is a bit lax at the moment. Though that will be changing sometime this year. Whereas other European nations will eat everything off an animal, we bin things that are classed as risk material i.e. the material from the cows that can contain BSE ergo CJD.
Though It's not all rosy in the UK. There are some really dodgy farmers and slaughter houses that will sell meat that is unfit for human consumption and indeed not worth feeding to a dog to kebab shops, curry houses.

That is my rant about where food comes over with. Next will be my rant about the new mental health bill (well it's been kicking around since 1998 or 1999).

The ADVERT for that freaked me out ;-)

I'm a vegetarian. Animals are for being cute and squeeed over ;-)

Realistically, however, I recognise that if everybody were to become vegetarian tomorrow, millions of animals would be slaughtered because they'd suddenly be surplus to requirement, and some animals like food-breeds of pigs would suddenly become endangered.

As far as i see it, it's part of the cycle of life and death.
Though if everyone went Vegan, then erm Global warming would increase faster because of all the methane gas that would be produced lol

I was freaked out by the slaughter process of the poor cow, but as soon as it was turned into joints of beef that all went out of the window. However I do want to know where the meat I'm eating comes from. As I vividly remember my English Teacher Miss Gabe showing us what went on in intensive meat farming. *feels queasy* I'd rather the animals were allowed to roam free in a field than being squashed into pens and cages before being turned into food.
Though if you believe Prince Charles plants have feelings too......

Plants release chemicals that let other plants know there's danger when they've got blights or are attacked by insects - the plants can't run away or anything productive, but on some level they're aware of the threat! ;-)

Fair enough. Personally, while I recognise that argument, because I don't feel that I need to eat meat for nutritional reasons, and I don't feel that I'm missing out by not eating meat (I miss marshmallows more than meat - bloody gelatine!), and because the idea of killing an animal to put it on my plate squicks me out, I'm happier not.

I also reckon my brother puts a lot more thought into what he eats than I do: he will only eat local grown/ organic/ free-range meat, non-overfished fish, won't eat things by companies with bad foreign policies, etc., etc. It's not for me because of the underlying dead-thing-on-plate issue, but it's a lifestyle choice I have nothing but respect and admiration for.

Intensive meat farming is pretty horrific.

I was being cheeky about the plants comment lol
However I was usually half awake during biology lessons at college so i missed most of the good stuff. Though by some fluke i managed to understand photosynthesis. Probably because it's got a bit of chemistry in it.
People can eat what they like in the developed world. I just get angry when i know the EU produces more crops than it needs to, which then get sold to other markets which keeps African farmers poor.
Basically we don't have to face the choice between eating the pet goat/sheep/cow or starving to death.
Like some people have to. So i think locally sourced food is probably the best way to go for us in the West. Unless it's stuff that you can't really grow in our part of the world.
